  5. 8th Grade Algebra 1 • Semester 1 topics • Review of the geometric transformations that these students learned last year, going into more depth with transformations on the coordinate plane. • Properties of angles created with transversals of parallel lines • Exponents, including negative exponents and scientific notation, as well as square and cube roots. • Solving linear equations and inequalities both algebraically and graphically, with emphasis on problem-solving with linear equations.

  6. 8th Grade Algebra 1 • Semester 1 topics, continued • Pythagorean Theorem and Distance Formula • Volume of cylinders, cones and spheres • Functions and their representations in verbal, tabular, algebraic and graph form • Operations with radical expressions, including rationalizing the denominator

  7. Accelerated Algebra 1 CC • Textbooks: McDougal Littell Mathematics 1 and Mathematics 2 – available online through the student portal • Workbooks: Georgia Notetaking Guide for the above textbooks • Other resources as needed • Must pass High School End of Course Test (EOCT) in May to move on to next course

  8. Accelerated Algebra 1 CC • Topics to be covered: • Linear functions, equations in slope intercept form, problem solving with linear functions • Linear inequalities • Exponential functions • Solving linear equations, inequalities and systems of linear equations • Recursive patterns (Fibonacci sequence) • Statistics and data analysis • Geometry: transformations on the coordinate plane • Geometry: similarity, congruence and proofs • Intro to analytic geometry • Volume of spheres, cones and cylinders

  9. Assignments: all classes • Assignments and handouts are usually available on the web, as is the entire textbook. • Daily homework guaranteed Monday through Thursday • Must have homework in class the next day or grade is zero • Homework grading (new this year!): 10 / 5 / 0 • Exception: excused absence • Weekly Project due every Friday • May be turned in up to three days late for point deductions.

  11. Required Supplies: Every Day • Notebook paper • Graph paper • Pencils • Erasers • Ruler • Fine-tip dry erase markers – for student use • A place to store math work – 3-ring, composition or spiral notebook

  12. Suggested Supplies (optional) • TI-Nspire CX color graphing calculator for home use. • approx. $140.00 • Get the CX, but do NOT buy the “CAS” model (computer algebra system) • If you buy one, bring in the “reward points” coupon from the package – we can earn more calculators! • Flash drive for computer projects with your name permanently attached (128Mb min.)

  13. Grading Weights – per GCPS • 50% Tests& Projects • 35% Quizzes, Weekly Projects, Classwork • 5% Daily assignments (homework) • 10% Semester final exam
