About Mrs. Traylor • This is my 11thyear teaching math at Shiloh Middle School • I previously taught in Fulton County Schools, and at a private school in Virginia • I also sponsor the Math Club, applications will be available soon; will meet in the morning this year • I am also the Gifted Coordinator at Shiloh MS 8th Grade Alg 1 AccAlg 1 CC
8th Grade Algebra 1 • “Accelerated Lite” • Covers 8th grade + part of 9th grade • Textbooks: Holt Algebra 1 (red) and Mathematics Course 3 (green) • Available online through the student portal • Workbook: Mathematics Course 3 Worktext
8th Grade Algebra 1 • Semester 1 topics • Review of the geometric transformations that these students learned last year, going into more depth with transformations on the coordinate plane. • Properties of angles created with transversals of parallel lines • Exponents, including negative exponents and scientific notation, as well as square and cube roots. • Solving linear equations and inequalities both algebraically and graphically, with emphasis on problem-solving with linear equations.
8th Grade Algebra 1 • Semester 1 topics, continued • Pythagorean Theorem and Distance Formula • Volume of cylinders, cones and spheres • Functions and their representations in verbal, tabular, algebraic and graph form • Operations with radical expressions, including rationalizing the denominator
Accelerated Algebra 1 CC • Textbooks: McDougal Littell Mathematics 1 and Mathematics 2 – available online through the student portal • Workbooks: Georgia Notetaking Guide for the above textbooks • Other resources as needed • Must pass High School End of Course Test (EOCT) in May to move on to next course
Accelerated Algebra 1 CC • Topics to be covered: • Linear functions, equations in slope intercept form, problem solving with linear functions • Linear inequalities • Exponential functions • Solving linear equations, inequalities and systems of linear equations • Recursive patterns (Fibonacci sequence) • Statistics and data analysis • Geometry: transformations on the coordinate plane • Geometry: similarity, congruence and proofs • Intro to analytic geometry • Volume of spheres, cones and cylinders
Assignments: all classes • Assignments and handouts are usually available on the web, as is the entire textbook. • Daily homework guaranteed Monday through Thursday • Must have homework in class the next day or grade is zero • Homework grading (new this year!): 10 / 5 / 0 • Exception: excused absence • Weekly Project due every Friday • May be turned in up to three days late for point deductions.

Required Supplies: Every Day • Notebook paper • Graph paper • Pencils • Erasers • Ruler • Fine-tip dry erase markers – for student use • A place to store math work – 3-ring, composition or spiral notebook
Suggested Supplies (optional) • TI-Nspire CX color graphing calculator for home use. • approx. $140.00 • Get the CX, but do NOT buy the “CAS” model (computer algebra system) • If you buy one, bring in the “reward points” coupon from the package – we can earn more calculators! • Flash drive for computer projects with your name permanently attached (128Mb min.)
Grading Weights – per GCPS • 50% Tests& Projects • 35% Quizzes, Weekly Projects, Classwork • 5% Daily assignments (homework) • 10% Semester final exam

Attendance • Daily attendance is critical! • Absence is excused only for: • Personal illness • death in the immediate family, • recognized religious holidays • absences mandated by governmental agencies, • instances where attendance would be hazardous • service as a Page in the Ga. General Assembly
Attendance – Make-up Work • “Students with excused absences will be given 5 days to make up work. It is the student's responsibility to ask the teacher for any missed assignments.” • Check the web site for missed assignments. • I do not take a grade for daily HW for the day you are absent, or for the next day, but I do expect you to know the material. Try to complete the HW so you do not fall behind! • Weekly Projects are NEVER excused.
Classroom Procedures • Use only pencil for math assignments, quizzes and tests or get a zero. (Exception: Vocabulary assignments may be typed or done in pen) • Have pencils sharpened and your homework on your desk when class begins. • Do your assignments every day (HW is guaranteed Monday – Thursday. Check the web site if absent). • Ask for help if you don’t understand.
Classroom Procedures • You are responsible for your assigned calculator. • No chewing gum. Period. • No cologne, makeup or hairstyling in class. • Keep your desk clean; throw away trash and recycling at the end of each class. • Afternoon homeroom is responsible for chairs and floor cleanup.

Classroom Procedures • If you don’t have a pencil, you can get one for a donation to Math Club. • Mechanical pencil 50¢ • Wooden pencil 25¢ • Pencil-top Eraser 10¢ each or 3 for 25¢ • Dry erase markers $1.50 • No credit. No American Express.
