The Connection Between Architecture and Literature Goths were a group of barbarians who sacked Rome (destroyed classic culture) • Gothic Architecture was seen as: • Crude • Rough • Primitive • Gothic Literature was seen as: • Crude • Simplistic • Heavy-handed (relied on overwhelming emotion, overdone description and supernatural elements)

Elements of Gothic Literature • Appearance of the supernatural- unable to be understood by science • Mystery and dread- the unknown and feared • Setting is often used to set the mood or reflect how the main character is feeling • Gothic hero- isolated from others by chance or design • Mirrors outside events • Psychology and horror- loss of sanity and descent into madness • Moral closure-at the end of the work, only possible salvation is through reunification with a loved one
