Kidlit • ‘Kidlit’ is literature which is written for young children. • The stories are short but bold with memorable characters. • Rhyme is often used, making these stories more like narrative poems. • These are often described as ‘picture books’ due to the importance of the illustrations. • A story in this genre will feature one clear theme/moral. • Repetition is a regular feature, e.g. ‘There’s no such thing as a Gruffalo.’

Julia Donaldson • Julia Donaldson is an English writer and playwright who has published 156 books, most of which are written for young children. • Her most famous book, The Gruffalo, has sold 10.5 million copies worldwide. • The Gruffalohas been adapted for a BBC film featuring John Hurt and there have been theatre productions on the West End and Broadway. • “Writing a children's book is like writing a joke… You have to get the punchline. People don't realise how important plot is.”

  4. Who says English isn’t fun? Let’s read The Gruffalo! • Take note of any literary techniques which you notice, e.g. Characterisation, Rhyme, Repetition, Theme…

Task You are going to work in your group to write a children’s book. • You will employ elements of the style seen in The Gruffaloand include Characterisation, Rhyme, RepetitionandTheme. • You must remember who your Audienceis (3-7 year old children) and tailor the Plotto engage their interests. • Your group’s book will be pressed and sold to raise money for Yorkhill – Royal Hospital for Sick Children. • You can choose to either buy the book for your family or donate the book to the children at the hospital.
