Report from Technical Coordination • Muon System • Magnet status • Tracking chamber status • ITS Issues • Pixels • Drift • Strips • TPC • Field Cage • Electronics C.W.Fabjan
Muon Magnet • Coils • Finished • Nice celebration at Nantes • Fine example of Technology Transfer CERN-Industry • Yoke • Finally with a further three week delay ( compared to last contract) railroad cars are being loaded • We have lost unfortunately 8 months total due to these…(do not know word for it…) C.W.Fabjan
Status of Tracking Chambers • Chambers of Station 1,2 • Station 1 : redesigned; 1st quadrant available end Oct. • Station 2: Kalkotta group to start testing end Oct ’03 • Chambers of Station 3,4,5 • The four production sites (Cagliari, Gatchina, Nantes, Saclay) on track for start of production from Oct, Nov ’03 onwards • Tracking Electronics • Indian flavor of Gassiplex (‘MANAS’) requires channel-by-channel calibration (also done in other systems : HMPID,ALTRO) • Procedure under development by Orsay; needs resolve before MANAS production can be launched • Tracking electronics is large and complex system; personally I believe that this is on the critical path and not enough personnel involved in the R/O system C.W.Fabjan
ITS Issues • Pixels • Order for final production for FEE chip being issued (waited for HAL25 success; see later) • Order for bump bonding being prepared • (expect no further delays from other clients) • Bari (half stave assembly) basically ready • Padua (ladder production basically ready • Catania ( wafer probing) needs final push… • Critical ( as ever): • Pixel bus production • MCM production C.W.Fabjan
ITS Issues • Drift • Very successful test with complete and final readout chain during 8/03 • Production of sensors still under study: • 2 * 25 sensors in production; to be evaluated 12/03 • Series production could start 2/04 • Preparing for engineering run of FEE (10/03) • 1st module for production qualification : 12/03 C.W.Fabjan
ITS Issues • Strips • HAL25 : finally…90 % yield in engineering run ! • ( also good news for pixels, drift and many other ….) • Helsinki and Strasbourg have produced 3*2 modules → production sites certified • Production to start (incl.3rd Italian site) in Oct/Nov • Beam test ongoing; globally progressing well; certain differences in performance seen between Canberra and ITS sensors; Canberra sensors used to perform well, but now barely acceptable; obviously needs study • CRITICAL : • Mass production of Al/Kapton cables in Ukrainian industry C.W.Fabjan
HAL25 V4 engineering runWafer 1: yield=89.6% Wafer 2: yield=92.6% C.W.Fabjan
TPC Field Cage Status • Inner Field Cage • Re-manufactured; load-,leak-tested : OK • Rod Production (supporting potential strips + other…) • Standard rods (54) : finished • ‘laser’ rods (12): in production;finished:15/11 • HV rods: in production • Resistor rods (exchangeable and water-cooled): • Prototype under HV test • 1st final RR rod :15/11 C.W.Fabjan
TPC Field Cage Status • Assembly of all four cylinders: • Sept. to Nov. 03 • Central Membrane manufactured,installed:12/03 • Potential strips • Jan. 04 to April 04 • Final tests • May-June 04 • Aggressive schedule, aimed to recover time • Consistent with work and personnel, but bad surprises not scheduled C.W.Fabjan
TPC Electronics • PASA: • Samples from Engineering run received; tested • Results to specification; no modification needed • Final production launched; all wafers available by end ‘03 • ALTRO Testing: • Progressing well; more than 20% tested; • Test infrastructure ( robot,..) will be used for PASA testing • RCU: • Final unit in production; will be available by Oct. 10th Tests to follow C.W.Fabjan
Summary • Infrastructure • Due to muon yoke delay 6 month shift in certain integration tasks: program until mid-05 still possible, but no contingency left (most recent issue: procurement of Muon Filter in Russia via Gatchina) • Installation of services proceeding in timely way • Detector systems • ITS; without contingency • TPC: Fieldcage, R/O chambers, electronics advancing correctly • Muons : electronics, cooling require full attention • Updated production schedules: CRIV • From IRII to IRIII • Full attention to commissioning issues, cable installation C.W.Fabjan
