  1. Topic: Basic algebra , expansion and factoriSation of ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION BY : FASIAL ARIF DAPS O & A Levels

  2. ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION An expression consisting on variables and constants by means of algebraic operators +,-,÷and x is known as ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION

  3. Back to history In 820 A.D. the Muslim mathematician, Al Khwarzmi, wrote the algebraic text entitled Al-Jabr (the science of cancellation and reduction) PROVERB The language of science is mathematics and the grammar of mathematics is algebra.

  4. POLYNOMIAL:A polynomial is analgebraic expression consisting of one or more terms For example X + 5, 5x + 7y Consider the algebraic expressions 4x 5x + 7

  5. Variable is a changing quantity usually denoted by a letter in algebraic equations. Since the value of 4x varies according to the value given to ‘x’, x is called a variable.

  6. Coefficient is a multiplying factor. In 2x2 + 3x = 0, x is a variable and the coefficient of x2 is 2 and that of x is 3.

  7. Expansion of ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION ( a + b)2 = a2 + 2ab+ b2 ( a - b)2 = a2- 2ab+ b2 ( a + b) ( a - b)= a2- b2

  8. Explanation Algebraic expression can be described or explained by using algebraic result ( a + b)2 = a2 + 2ab+ b2 ( a - b)2 = a2 - 2ab+ b2 ( a + b) ( a - b) = a2 - b2

  9. Expand the following expressions: ( a + 4) 2 = (a)2+ 2(a)(4)+ (4)2 = a2 + 8a+ 16 ii) ( p – 2q) 2 = (p)2 - 2(p)(2q)+ (2q)2 = P2 – 4pq+ 4q2

  10. FactoriSation The process of writing an algebraic expression as a product of two or more other algebraic expression which are called factors of first algebraic expression is called factorisation

  11. Explanation Factorise the following: a) 3x + 12y = 3( x + 4y) b) x2 + 6x + 9 = x2 + 2(3)(x) + (3)2 = ( x + 3) 2 c) k2 - 81 = k2 – 92 = (k + 9 ) (k - 9 )

  12. Conclusion At the end of lesson students should be able to comprehend to expand and factorise an algebraic expressions by using different algebraic results. Practice questions Factorise the following: x2 – 9 8x + 4 Thank you
