Discovering Blue Baby Syndrome in Gopher Hollow • CDC reported cases of 4 different families with infants identified with the illness Blue Baby Syndrome (BBS) • Characteristics of BBS are a blue-like color of the skin typically around the nose, mouth, feet and hands • Found to be a result of the blood disease Methemoglobinemia • Methemoglobinemia found to have derived from nitrites consumed from drinking water
Nitrites in Community Water Well • Residents get drinking water from community well • CDC tested and found harmful levels of nitrites in well water • Nitrites consumed by infants is harmful and deregulates oxygen flow through the blood stream • 4 locations found to be possible culprits of spreading nitrites through the rivers & streams that lead to the well
Nitrogen Life Cycle • Nitrites are the results of a natural process called the nitrogen life cycle
Results of Nitrite in Drinking Water • Form methemoglobin in human system • Adults can convert methemoglobin back into hemoglobin • Infants (up to 6 mos.) have not formed the enzyme for conversion • Affected infants’ blood loses ability to transport oxygen to cells and tissues • Blue-like color of skin forms • Other symptoms: lethargy, breathing complications, vomiting, death.
CDC Investigatory Results • 4 possible culprits of infection • newly developed swim/golf/tennis subdivision • t-shirt producing textile plant • organic farms with cows and acres of zucchini • mountain lake overgrown with algae • Sophisticated testing of the waters surrounding each site location resulted in the textile plant as the culprit of excessive nitrite concentration • Environmental regulations and treatment to the facility were conducted
Concluding the CDC Findings • Well water no longer contains high concentrations of harmful nitrites • The babies of the 4 cases were treated and brought back to great health • The 4 culprits and other locations systematically undergo treatment for the spread of chemicals leading to excess development of nitrites and its spread to surrounding waters
