Brockenhurst College • Medium sized FE college in the New Forest • 2700-ish sixth formers • 8000-ish adult learners • CoVE regional partnership with 2 other colleges
“Emily” • An internal college MLE project • Electronic registration & attendance tracking • Class registers • Messaging • Attendance reports for staff (via Emily), students and parents (via My.Brock portal) • System used for all sixth form classes since Sept 2003 • Also performance monitoring, ILP, timetables…
Project Aims • To develop a toolkit to enable the creation of attendance registration systems • To produce service definitions for the problem space
ELF Context • Reporting • Proposed service allows attendance data to be provided to external agencies and to management. • Tracking • Allows student attendance and participation in learning events to be recorded and monitored. • Activity Management • Proposed services play a role in the management of classroom-based activities. • Could be applied equally well to remote / online scenarios where attendance or participation must be recorded.
Toolkit Outputs • Service Definitions for taking registers and tracking attendance • UML • WSDL • Service implementation • Web services • Middle tier code • Back end database • Service consumer • A robust, working registration system for institutions to build upon if they choose • Evaluation • Input from students, academics and MIS staff
Standards & Specs • No suitable e-learning standard for the domain currently exists, but we will be using: • IMS Enterprise Services • For building class lists • iCalendar • For activity scheduling • Obligatory WSDL, SOAP, XSD… • Endeavour to conform to existing conventions and best pracices (IMS etc)
Technologies & Tools • C# / .Net / ASMX • Sql Server • ASP.Net • Windows Server 2003 / 2000 Server / XP Professional
