World War I Events
Why was Germany trying to stop neutral ships? Germany was desperate to win the war. The USA was sending supplies over the Allies to help them win.
The US stayed out of the war for 3 years. Americanswere not in favor of going to war. Many felt it was none of our business!
Why we changed our mind • Germany invaded neutral Belgium in 1914 • Lusitania sank in 1915 • January 1917 Zimmerman Telegraph • Germany allowed U Boats to target any ships February 1917
Zimmerman Telegraph Urged Mexico to attack the United States If this happened, Germany would restore to Mexico land it had lost during the Mexican War
November 8, 1918 The war ended!!!
Wilson’s 14 Points 1. Elimination of: trade barriers, secret treaties, arms races among nations
2. People should be able to choose the government that live under. 3. An association of nations(League of Nations)
Treaty of VersaillesSaid that Germany… • Was required to give up territory to France and to Poland, • Took territories in Africa and the Pacific, • Army could not be larger than 100,000 men
Not allowed to have an air force, could only have a small navy, • Required to take responsibility for starting the war
Trench Warfare See Chapter on Trench Warfare.
Both sides dug trenches in a zigzag fashion. • About 10 feet deep and fortified with sandbags and wood. • A barbed wire barrier was placed in front of the trenches to keep enemies out. • The area between trenches was called no man’s land.
Soldiers could no longer charge with bayonets. Machine guns were used to fire at enemies.
Poison Gas • A greenish-yellow cloud of air first released by the Germans. • Chlorine Gas: Caused death by suffocation • Tear Gas: Temporarily blinded all who came in contact
The use of these gasses by Germany violated the 1907 agreement to not use weapons that caused unnecessary suffering.
About 79,000 soldiers died as a result of being exposed to the poison gas.
When the war began all major powers had a small number of airplanes.
Early in the fighting pilots threw bricks, rusty chains, and other objects from the cockpit. They soon began shooting each other with their pistols, muskets, and shot guns.
German pilots discovered how to fire a machine gun straight ahead without hitting the propeller blade. “Dogfights” were individual battles between enemy pilots.
