Leaves are submersed, typically thin and translucent. Some varieties have floating leaves on the water surface. They grow in water depths from 1-10 feet and can tolerate low light. Strong roots anchor the weeds into sediment. Pondweed sprouts in the fall from turions (buds) on the lake or pond bottom. These young weeds remain alive under the ice all winter. Early summer, Pondweed begins to grow and flowers appear like clusters of beads. Some of these bead clusters spike above the water surface. These spikes release pollen that fertilize other weeds. Flowers then drop fruit to the bottom. The seeds in the fruit germinate. Turions are produced late summer before parent weed dies. These turions settle into bottom muck and lay dormant until early fall. All control methods are safe for Our Products Reference Charts Contact Us FAQs Request a Brochure fish and wildlife. Prevention is best and can be achieved by proper construction with deep sides and proper watershed to reduce nutrient buildup. Physical removal can be done with cutting or raking devices. Remember, this water weed can reproduce from fragmentation. Remove all fragments to keep unwanted pond weeds from spreading. Physical barriers like a lake mat work well for swimming areas, docks and boat lifts, provided regular muck removal is done. Biological control can be done with the introduction of Grass Carp. Grass Carp need warm water to develop an appetite. It may take one or more seasons to provide control. Stock in the spring prior to weed growth at the rate of 7-15 Grass Carp per surface acre. If pond remains cold over the summer, Trout would be a better stock option. Chemical control can be done with 1 of 3 aquatic weed killing options: Diquat (Harvester) Contact option. Kills foliage it makes good contact with. Endothall (Aquathol Super K Granular & Hydrothol Granular) Contact option. Most effective in 65° or warmer water. Fluridone (Fluridone) Selective systemic option. Apply in spring for complete control. Call or email with questions or if you need additional information.
