  1. To build up our knowledge and understanding of improvements made to housing and health in the 20th Century. AIM! • By the end of this lesson: • Describe the 4 main improvements made to housing.

  2. Tackling the Problem The 1919 ‘Addison’ Act =  Slums demolished  Council houses.  Money soon ran out The Wheatley Act 1924 = • Councils given more money to build houses (75,000 in Scotland) • BUT many more were needed. “Homes fit for Heroes”

  3. Council Housing Estates • Low rents • Adequate living space  Gas, electricity, running water  Toilets • Gardens  Same design  No public amenities nearby e.g. shops, parks. • You would be ‘placed’ into a house – no choice of location

  6. INTRODUCTION BACKGROUND: POINTS YOU WILL DISCUSS: This essay will explain fully, disease, over-crowding and poor quality buildings. = 1 marks

  7. Intro & Conclusion = 2 marks Main body = 6 marks (this is for KU) Aim for 3 paragraphs – with at least 2 pieces of KU in each.

  8. In conclusion, there were many problems with urban housing. For example, over-crowding and poorly built houses. The most important factor, however, is disease because it accounted for many deaths.
