  1. Energy and Energy Conservation GEOTHERMAL - Using the Temperature Underground

  2. Toronto HydroDeepwater Cooling System • In winter, the surface of Lake Ontario cools to about 4° C. This cold water's density increases, causing it to sink. • In summer, the surface water heats up, stays at the surface because it's warm • No matter how hot the summer, the deeper water remains very cold. • permanent reservoir of cold water on the bottom of Lake Ontario.

  3. Pipes along the natural slope of the lake bottom pump water from a depth of 83 meters into the city • Filtered – used as drinking water • More importantly – cools downtown office buildings instead of air conditioners • Eliminates hundreds of tonnesof CO2, NOx and SO2.

  4. Downtown Toronto facilities online with Enwave's Deep Lake Water Cooling: • Air Canada Centre • Metro Toronto Convention Centre • Royal Bank Plaza • Steam Whistle Brewery • Trump Tower • Queen Street Bay Store • Citibank Place • TD Centre • Queen's Park • Metro Hall • New City Hall • Old City Hall • Metro Centre • Marriot Residence Inn Hotel • RBC Centre • Ritz-Carlton Hotel & Residences • Toronto Rehabilitation • Mount Sinai Hospital • Munich Re Centre

  5. Enhanced Geothermal(Electricity Generation) • currently being developed and tested in France, Australia, Japan, Germany, the U.S. and Switzerland • Enhanced Geothermal Systems, or EGS, produces heat and electricity by harnessing the energy from hot rock deep below the earth's surface • Water is injected several km underground • The water is naturally heated (above boiling point), and drawn up to drive turbines

  7. Why isn’t Canada doing this? • Articles.
