  9. Grade 11 Individual ConferencesMarch 11 – April 26 • Review most recent IB grades. • Discuss career/educational interests and plans. • Discuss the various opportunities available in different countries. • Make a timeline for applications.

  10. Degrees in England & Wales • Foundation: 1 year • Bachelors: 3 years. • Masters: 4 years. • Bachelor of Medicine: 5 years.

Personal Statement • Your chance to: • Show your passion for the course • Convince the admissions tutor to take you • Personal Statement Writing presentation on March 25th plus advice on www.vis.ac.at • Further advice on www.ucas.com • It must be your original work. UCAS uses plagiarism detection software

Reference • Your counsellor will write your reference. • He will use the comments provided by your subject teachers • He will also select relevant information from your ‘Student Self Assessment Form’ • Your subject teachers will provide the counsellor with Predicted IB grades; your counsellor will add these to the reference and they will be sent to UCAS

  21. Predicted IB Grades • June 20th Teachers will upload predicted IB grades + comments. • These grades will be e mailed to you so that you can make informed decisions about your course choices. • Early September ToK and EE predicted grades uploaded.

  24. Fees • EU citizens • Scotland – no tuition fees • England – up to GBP 9,000 • (Pay in advance or after you graduate) • International (non EU) • UK – GBP 9,000 – 25,000

  28. USA… How do you create a short list of colleges? • Determine colleges that are: Reach, Target, Safety • You can use College Search at www.collegeboard.com • Based on SAT scores Consider financial cost • Tuition fees • In-state vs. out-of-state tuition fees

  29. US Applications 1. www.commonapp.com • Fill out all personal information, select colleges etc. • Go to School Forms – Recommenders – Invite. • Type in names and e mail addresses of the counsellor and teachers (normally 2) who are going to write your recommendations. Check Spelling.

Direct Application • Apply online at the college’s own website • E mail your counsellor with a list of supporting documentation and where it needs to be sent - address of ‘Office of Undergraduate Admissions’ at the university • Meet with your counsellor to discuss what supporting documentation needs to be sent

The sooner you apply, the better. • Early Decision/Early Action –Oct 4 (Nov 1) • Regular Admission – Nov 15 (Jan 1 or 15) • College decision deadline – March 31 • Candidates Reply Date – May 1 • NB. Some colleges have different deadlines...check the websites carefully.

  33. SAT FAQs • What is the SAT? • The SAT Reasoning Test is a test of English and Math; it is required for US colleges, some may also require SAT Subject Tests. • When should I take the SAT? • January/May/June 11th Grade October/November/December 12th Grade • Register online www.collegeboard.com

  35. SAT How do I prepare for SAT? • Use The Collegeboard’s Official SAT Online Course. 2. VIS has organised an intensive SAT prep course with 22 hours of contact time.

Check carefully on the university’s own website as different programs within the same university may have different deadlines… typically November to January/early February

  38. Canada • Academic Requirements • IB diploma…usually above 32 points for the more popular universities. • No SAT needed.

  41. Deadlines • Check all deadlines carefully as these differ from college to college and may change over the next few months. • It is the student’s responsibility to check on each college’s deadlines – and to meet all deadlines both internal VIS deadlines and external college deadlines.
