Introduction • http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfoundland-labrador/2-young-stars-of-the-traditional-music-scene-1.1336435 • Why is it important that young people have insight into traditional music? • If you’re listening to this without knowing anything about it what do you hear? • What does this music tell you about Newfoundland culture?

  3. What is Folk Music? • Traditional music of the people. • Performed by the people themselves and played within their own community. • Passed on orally from one generation to the next.

  4. What instruments are traditionally used? • fiddles [violins] • concertina [a type of accordion] • penny whistle [similar to a recorder] • Northumbrian small pipes [a form of bagpipes] • In Newfoundland and Labrador the instruments are similar, fiddles, accordion, tin whistle, bodhran, acoustic guitars etc.

  5. Two Styles of Folk Music • Traditional music: music with traditional instruments passed down through generations and still performed in its original style. Reproduced as it was originally. • Modern versions were developed incorporating modern and commercial versions of old songs in folk style. Many wrote new songs in folk style using modern issues - drugs, homelessness, and race.

  6. Bringing it back • Here is a great video of a workshop being done in schools around the island. Fergus O’Byrne who has been promoting and performing Irish Newfoundland Music since the 1970’s is conducting workshops teaching traditional music. Why is this important? Creating the Ballad • What is a ballad? • any light, simple song, especially one of sentimental or romanticcharacter having two or more stanzas or verses all sung to the same melody. • a simple narrative poem of folk origin, composed in short stanzas and adapted for singing. • Musical Form is usually Verse Chorus or Verse Verse Chorus.

  9. Newfoundland Ballads • Listen to both Ballad examples and answer these questions. • What aspects of both songs make them Ballads? What do these songs tell us about the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. What is similar about the Musical Form of these songs and what is different? If you were listening to this at a local event what instruments would you expect to use? What makes these modern versions?
