  1. Igneous Rocks With Mrs. Coates (and her 6-yr-old Son)

  2. Rocks • 3 Types of Rocks: • Igneous • Sedimentary • Metamorphic

  3. Igneous • Igneous means “made from fire or heat.” • When the rock is liquid & inside the earth, it is called magma. Outside the earth it is called lava. • Igneous rocks are formed from magma or lava.

  4. Igneous • When magma cools under the Earth’s surface it becomes rock! • We call rocks that cool INSIDE the Earth INTRUSIVEIGNEOUS ROCK.

  5. Igneous • We call rocks that cool OUTSIDE the Earth EXTRUSIVEIGNEOUS ROCK.

  6. Igneous • Intrusive vs. Extrusive Igneous Rock

  7. Igneous BIG PINK AND BLACK CRYSTALS NO CRYSTALS, FULL OF HOLES!

  8. Igneous Large Black Crystals TINY White Crystals

  9. Igneous Intrusive or Extrusive?

  10. Igneous Extrusive There are no visible crystals and the rock is full of holes. This rock must have cooled quickly.

  11. Igneous Intrusive or Extrusive?

  12. Igneous Intrusive There are very large crystals, which indicate slow cooling

  13. Igneous Intrusive or Extrusive?

  14. Igneous Intrusive There are several large crystals. Large crystals are formed when magma cools slowly.

  15. Igneous Intrusive or Extrusive?

  16. Igneous Extrusive There are no visible crystals and the rock is full of holes. This rock must have cooled quickly.

  17. Igneous Intrusive or Extrusive?

  18. Igneous Extrusive There are no visible crystals. This rock must have cooled quickly.

  19. Igneous Intrusive or Extrusive?

  20. Igneous Intrusive There are very large crystals. This rock must have cooled slowly.

  21. Igneous • Sample test question: How are igneous rocks grouped? A. by the shape and size of the rock sample B. by how quickly the molten magma cooled C. by the place in the world the sample was found. D. by whether there are layers or bands of crystals
