  1. Writing Benchmark

  2. On the writing benchmark, you will be given a prompt that you have to respond to in a set amount of time (one class period). The prompt will give you an argument presented by an author and you will have to state the author's argument, state your position on the argument (do you agree or disagree with the author), and give reasons and examples for your response (including a counterargument to your stance). Today we are going to talk about how to write a successful essay.

  3. Steps of Writing a Successful Essay STEP 1 Read the prompt Joe Zippo isn't your average-looking employee. His left arm is covered with tattoos, his lower lip is pierced, and his earlobes have holes the size of half dollars. The first question I ask myself, "Does this guy have a job?" Many young people today are sporting tattoos and piercings long before they consider entering the adult job market. A recent study states that one in three Americans between 18 and 25 has a tattoo. This growing fad will lead its followers to a life of lower wages. A job applicant with little or no experience ought to be conservative in appearance, even at a casual company, says Barbara Chapman, director of career development at Orange State University. “You never have a second chance to make a first impression. Interviews are serious events and should be taken seriously.” It is unfortunate that those who bear the “artwork” of a fad-ridden generation will suffer lifelong consequences. - Quentin Parsons Explain the author's argument and discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with his/her views. Support your position by referring to the passage and by providing reasons and examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.

  4. Steps of Writing a Successful Essay STEP 2 Identify difficult words Are there words that you don't understand? Using context clues, try to identify the meaning of the words. (Remember: On a timed essay you will not be able to use a dictionary, so you will have to make an educated guess about the meaning.)

  5. Steps of Writing a Successful Essay STEP 3 Understand the prompt Make sure you understand what you are supposed to write! You can't write a passing essay if you don't address the prompt. Use this acronym to help you: PRESS
