  3. Oriental Influences • First known floral designers • Focus on linear form and plant material • Negative space important

  4. Negative Space • Space is the empty areas between flowers and other materials

  5. Flowers • Chysanthemum – grown as a flowering herb by the Chinese, Japanese adopted the flower as their seal. • Easter lily – native to Japan • Bamboo – emblem of modesty • Hollow stems – represented an empty heart

  6. Containers • Bowls, jars, tall vases, low basins • Made of pottery, porcelain or pewter • Decorative patterns

  7. Chinese Vs. Japanese • Chinese • Less stylized • Use of few flowers and interesting branches • Use of vertical element
