Today’s Lesson will: • Define negative space • Contrast Chinese and Japanese art • Show symbolism of flowers and designs

Oriental Influences • First known floral designers • Focus on linear form and plant material • Negative space important

Negative Space • Space is the empty areas between flowers and other materials

Flowers • Chysanthemum – grown as a flowering herb by the Chinese, Japanese adopted the flower as their seal. • Easter lily – native to Japan • Bamboo – emblem of modesty • Hollow stems – represented an empty heart

Containers • Bowls, jars, tall vases, low basins • Made of pottery, porcelain or pewter • Decorative patterns

Chinese Vs. Japanese • Chinese • Less stylized • Use of few flowers and interesting branches • Use of vertical element

Chinese vs. Japanese • Chinese • At most 3 types of flowers in vase • Focus on Ying and yang (dainty and strong) • Lines portray movement • Flowers one color or 2-3 harmonious colors
