Biological Monitoring • A progressive worker exposure control/management system is applied based on measurement of Cd-urine (Cd-blood) and early biological indicators of renal dysfunction: • Cd-U<2 µg/g creatinine: general medical follow-up (complementary indicator: Cd-B<3µg/l)
Biological Monitoring • 2<Cd-U<5 µg/gC: biological indicators (BI’s) of early renal dysfunction are being measured on a regular basis • if BI’s remain below the reference value, the worker is kept at the workplace, and the reason for the increased exposure is determined followed by additional hygiene measures, if appropriate. • If the BI’s are exceeding the reference values or showing a consistent increasing pattern approaching the reference values, the worker is removed from Cd-exposure. • CdU > 5: worker is removed from exposure.
PNEC • The generic PNEC for Cd is 0.19µg/l (dissolved fraction) • A PNEC dependent on hardness of receiving water can also be used (all expressed as dissolved Cd-fraction): • 0.08 µg/l (hardness <50mg CaCO3/l) • 0.09 µg/l (hardness 50 - < 100mg CaCO3/l) • 0.15 µg/l (hardness 100 - < 200 mg CaCO3/l) • 0.25 µg/l (hardness >200mg CaCO3/l
