Summa Honors Dietrich Bonhoeffer was born on February 4, 1906 and was hanged at a Nazi concentration camp in 1945 just days before Allies arrived. During his life, he became a respected and well-renowned Lutheran theologian Got his Doctorate in Theology from the University of Berlin and graduated with summa cum laude and then attained another doctorate known as a Habilitation all before age of 25
Cheap Grace Published his most famous work The Cost of Discipleship in 1937 Within his book, Bonhoeffer argued that Christians often times understand grace as something that is effortlessly received as well as freely given, which he labeled as “cheap grace” Reiterated the idea that real grace is costly, for it comes at the expense of hardships one must suffer as a consequence of obedience to Christ
“Silence is the face of evil itself.” During the looming times of war around 1939, Bonhoeffer travelled to Harlem to avoid fighting for Hitler’s forces Later decided to return, arguing that he could not take part in the reconstruction of his country if he would not take part in the turmoil While is Germany, he took part in the German intelligence organization known as the Abwehr, which he used to disguise his attempts at establishing relations with Allies forces for post-Hitler Germany, along with conspiring against Hitler's rule
Doing his Time Bonhoeffer was arrested on account of a long-standing rivalry between the SS and the Abwehr While continuing his work in religious outreach with the prisoners and guards, some sympathetic guards would help him smuggle out his letters, which became part of a collection so cleverly named Letters and Papers from Prison Within his letters, Bonhoeffer expressed the idea that the world had reached a point where religion could no longer suffice society by only offering comfort in times of trouble
Camp Sunshine After a year and a half in prison, secret Abwehr documents relating to the conspiracy plans were discovered, along with the connection to Bonhoeffer. Bon eventually ended up in the Flossenburg concentration camp Bonhoeffer began considering the possibility of a “religionless Christianity,” a faith for modern men and women who can get along without religion but must still follow Christ’s example His idea came to a halt when he was hanged on April 9th, 1945, just two weeks before Allies forces arrived and liberated the camp
