IN YOUR PAST HISTORY CLASSES, YOU HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO STUDY A VARIETY OF OTHER TYPES OF SOCIETIES AND CULTURES. WHAT DO YOU THINK DEFINES A SOCIETY? DO YOU THINK SUCESSFUL SOCIETIES HAVE RULES IN PLACE? WHY OR WHY NOT? WHY WOULD SOCIETIES MAKE RULES?

AS MEMBERS OF A CIVILIZED SOCIETY WE CAN TAKE AN ACTIVE PART IN PEACEFULLY RESOLVING CONFLICTS BETWEEN INDIVIDUALS IN A CONSTRUCTIVE AND CONTROLED MANNER SUCH AS JUVENILES. PEER MENTORING
PEER MENTORING ACTIVITY STEPS 1. Agree on ground rules. (List them) 2. Each person tells their side uninterrupted (Take notes) 3. Verify the stories. (How would you do that?) 4. The parties involved have a civilized discussion (Take notes) 5. All parties brainstorm solutions. (Take notes) 6. The parties agree on one solution. (List solution) 7. EQ: Why is it important for juveniles to follow the rules of our society? Juvenile Court Most Juvenile crimes and issues are dealt with in this court. Juvenile courts may retain jurisdiction over delinquent youth till the age of 21. This court deals with issues of military enlistment for juveniles & consent for minors to marry.
EQ: Why is it important for juveniles to follow the rules of our society? Superior Court Superior court deals with more serious crimes and infractions. Adoption proceedings are dealt with in this court. Violent Crimes and Felonies are heard in this court.

ACTION / OFFENSE • This is when a crime is committed or an event occurs that deems necessary intervention on the part of the JJS. • Some events such as child abuse and neglect are cause for intervention by the JJS. • There are two basic types of categories most crimes fall under: Felonies& Misdemeanors

INTAKE • Legal authorities apprehend the juvenile. • Parents/ Guardians are notified. • Juveniles can be taken to a detention center or released to the parents or guardians depending on the individual situation. • A JJS officer investigates the charges and the youth is either: • Counseled and released. • Assigned further counseling, assessed fines or ordered to pay for any damages they may have caused. • A formal hearing / trial is set.

RESOLUTION There are several ways a JJS case may be resolved: The juvenile may be released to the custody of parents/guardians or foster care The juvenile may be placed on probation The juvenile may be committed to a Juvenile detention center aimed at preventing delinquent youth from becoming adult criminals Provide specialized treatment for those juveniles who have been abused or suffer from medical impairments.
