Starter task: What am I? • I am extremely large (up to 772 km across) • I form in the tropics • I have four different names depending on where I form • I have an ‘eye’. • I need warm and deep seas to form • I used to only get given girls names! • I can cause lots of damage when I dissipate my energy. • I have very strong winds and lots of moisture! • I am a low pressure weather event WHAT AM I?
Learning Goal #1: To identify WHAT is a tropical storm Buzz with your partners – what 5 words would you give to describe the physical geography happening in this photograph?
To identify what a tropical storm is A tropical storm is a rotating spiral of high winds and low pressure. What do you notice about the names of tropical storms on this map?
What is the difference between a hurricane, typhoon and cyclone? • Only geography. • Tropical storms occur in several of the world's oceans, and except for their names, they are essentially the same type of storm.
Geography of Tropical Storms • In the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and the Eastern Pacific Ocean, they are called hurricanes. • In the Western Pacific Ocean, they are called typhoons. • In the Indian Ocean, the Bay of Bengal, and Australia, these types of storms are called cyclones.
Learning Goal 2: To describe WHERE tropical storms develop Extension: Why do they form in these locations? Can you name the 3 features found here? • Warm ocean temperatures (27°C or more) • Deep water (50m or more) • Trade winds
What would you now like to add? Reflecting on my progress: 1 = I don’t know anything 10 = I feel very confident. Lesson Goals To identify what a tropical storm is. To describe where tropical storms develop. Check your Knowledge:
Learning Goal: To explain HOW tropical storms are FORMED. • Fill in the story board while watching the Hurricane animation. Extension questions: What causes tropical storms to die out? Could Canada ever have a tropical storm? Why? Click link above for animation
Check your Knowledge: • Describe the location of where tropical storms form (3 marks). • Explain why Tropical Storms occur in these parts of the world (3 marks).
Describe the location of where tropical storms form (3 marks). Mark scheme • 3 locational points needed. These could include: • They form between the equator and tropic of Cancer/Capricorn (1). • The form to the north and south of the equator (1) • Could mention a specific ocean for (1) • Could say to the east of Asia/North of Australia for (1)
Explain why Tropical Storms occur in these parts of the world (3 marks). MARK SCHEME • Oceans have deep seas which are needed for formation (1) • Around the equator are warm seas (above 27 degrees) which are needed for formation (1) as air will rise to form a low pressure system (1) rising moist air then condenses forming the thick clouds and heavy rain (1) • At the equator, the trade winds help the storm to spin (1).
Mini Quiz 10 Questions • What is the minimum temperature needed for Hurricanes to form? • Do air particles move from areas of low to high pressure or from areas of high to low pressure to create winds? • What is the name of the winds which blow from the equator and start to spin the Hurricane? • When the clouds stretch over such a large distance they are effected by the rotation of the earth this is known as the ______ effect? • What is the name given to the centre of a Hurricane?
What is the word given to describe the spinning high winds and heavy rainstorms? • In which Ocean do Typhoons form? • Do Hurricanes tend to travel • West then South? • East then North? • West then North? • What happens to a Hurricanes energy when it reaches land? • Increases • Decreases • Stays the Same • What scale is used to measure the strength of a Hurricane?
Check Your Answers! • 27 degrees Celsius • High to low • Trade Winds • Coriolis Effect • Eye • Vortex • Pacific • C – West then North • B – Decreases • Saffir-Simpson
