  3. Where did they come from? • The Furies were daughters of the earth, Gaea. • They were conceived through the blood of the butchered body of Uranus, the god of the sky. • The origin of the Furies set them apart from the other Greek and Roman gods.

  4. Where do the Furies live? • The Furies were from the underworld and lived in Erebus. • The Furies were called forth by a curse placed upon a sinner. • Furies sought justice and vengeance and tortured the damned on earth and in the underworld.

  5. Purpose • The Furies were called upon to pursue people who had murdered family members. • They were terrifying and punished the wicked without pity. • Furies haunted their victims until they were driven mad.

  6. Appearance • Furies were not beautiful and were often pictured as foul smelling hags and monstrous. • They had coal black skin, hair intertwined with serpents and carried torches whips and venom to torture their victims • A group of Furies would appear as a swarm of insects or as a storm.

  7. Stories • In Eumenides, a Greek play Orestes get hounded by the furies for the murder of Clytemnestra. • The furies wanted Orestes to be punished for his actions.
