Review of Genesis 47: • Joseph presented five of his brothers and his father to Pharaoh, vs. 1-12. • Joseph dealt very wisely with the Egyptians as the famine continued, vs. 13-26. • Joseph vowed to Jacob that he would bury him in the land of Canaan, Genesis 47:27-31.
Observation: • Genesis 47 concluded with information that Jacob lived another 17 years, and of Joseph promising to bury him in the land of Canaan. • Some time must have passed between chapters 47 and 48, for Joseph was away when news came that his father was “sick,” Genesis 48:1.
Brief Outline of Genesis 48: • Joseph and his two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, visit his dying father, Genesis 48:1-7. • Jacob blessed the two sons of Joseph, Genesis 48:8-22. • Note: “By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and worshipped, leaning on the top of his staff,” Hebrews 11:21.
Joseph and his two sons visit his Dying Father, 48:1-7. • “After these things,” Joseph was told “indeed your father is sick,” v. 1. • The “things” mentioned in Gen. 47:27-31. • Joseph “took with him his two sons,” v.1; their births recorded in Genesis 41:50-52. • Jacob was told that Joseph was coming, so he “strengthened himself and sat up on the bed,” v. 2.
Joseph and his two Sons visit His Dying Father, Con’t. • Jacob told Joseph what God had done for him, Genesis 48:3,4. • “God Almighty appeared to me at Luz.. And blessed me,” v. 3; Gen. 28:19; Genesis 35:1-3, 9-15. • “God said..I will make you fruitful and multiply you,” v. 4; Genesis 28:14. • God said I will “give this land to your descendants,” v. 4; 28:13; 35:12.
Joseph and his two sons visited his Dying Father, vs. 1-8, con’t. • “And now your two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh,…are mine,” Genesis 48:5. • Jacob was adopting Joseph’s sons! • He said they “are mine; as Reuben and Simeon..,” v. 5; Genesis 29:32,33. • Eventually they would supersede Reuben and Simeon, I Chron. 5:1; Genesis 35:22; 34:25. • Ephraim and Manasseh would become two of the tribes of Israel. Levi was not given a specific land allotment; Josh.14:4; Num.35
Joseph and his two sons visit His Dying Father, versus 1-7, con’t. • “Your offspring…after them shall be yours; they will be called by the name of their brothers in their inheritance.” • Joseph then mentioned the death of Rachel, Genesis 48:7. • Joseph and Benjamin were the sons of Rachel, Gen. 30:24; 35:16-19, Jacob’s first real love, Genesis 29:18-20. So the sons of Joseph would receive favored status.
Jacob Blessed the Two Sons of Joseph, Gen. 48:8-22. • Jacob (Israel) saw Joseph’s sons, and asked “whose are these,” Genesis 48:8. • Jacob said “bring them to me, and I will bless them,” Genesis 48:9,10. • Jacob’s gratitude: “I had not thought to see your face; but in fact, God has shown me your offspring,” v. 11.
Jacob Blessed the Two Sons of Joseph, Genesis 48:8-22. • Note the scene in Genesis 48:13,14. • In Blessing Ephraim, Jacob praised God, saying: • He has “fed me all my life…v. 15. • “The Angel..has redeemed me from all evil,” v. 16. • “Let my name be upon them,” v. 16. • “Let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth,” v. 16
Jacob blessed the Two Sons of Joseph, Gen. 48:8-22, con’t. • Joseph thought his father was confused, but Jacob knew what he was doing, Genesis 48:17-19! • Jacob blessed both Ephraim and Manasseh; said the “younger brother shall be greater than he and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations,” 48:19,20. cf. Isaiah 7:8,17; 11:13. Note also Numbers 1:32-35.
Jacob Blessed the Two Sons of Joseph, Gen. 48:8-22, con’t. • To Joseph: “God will be with you and bring you back to the land of your fathers,” Genesis 48:21. • “I have given you one portion above your brothers,” Genesis 48:22. • Joseph, through his sons, would receive two portions of the land of Canaan. • Thus Joseph, the first born son of Rachel, received a double portion. Cf. Deut. 21:17.
Some Practical Applications to be Obtained from this Chapter: • Children are Gifts from God! Genesis 48:9; Psalm 127:3. • God-Fearing Parents Share their Faith with their Offspring, 48:9; Eph. 6:4. • God-Fearing Children show Respect for their God-fearing Parents, 48:12; Exodus 20:12.
Practical Applications – con’t • Things are often Better than they Seem, Genesis 48:11; Romans 8:18. • We Reap as we Sow, Galatians 6:7; Genesis 48:5; 49:3-5. • God is our Shepherd! Genesis 48:15; Lit. “the God Who..shepherded me.” cf. Psalm 23:1; 80:1. • God wants His people properly shepherded! John 10:11; Heb. 13:20,21.
Conclusion: • God kept His promises to His people in Old Testament times! • In due season, “in the fullness of the time,” Galatians 4:4, God sent His own Son to save us from our sins, Luke 24:44; John 3:16. • But Jesus only saves those who obey Him, Hebrews 5:9.
