Delivery of Specimens byDesignated Boxes and Transport Service to Reduce Potential Hazards to PublicElaine Ng, HM(SS)5, Supporting Services, QEH Background / Problems Identified • Patient Data may be disclosed during the delivery process from Dumbwaiter to Pathology within Hospital Compound. • Hazards/ risks may be exposed to Public if spillage occurs during transportation by public transport when delivery of specimen Outside Hospital Compound is required. Objectives • To enhance patient privacy. • To reduce potential hazards to public. Actions Taken • Nylon bags were supplied by CPSD, KCC and used by Dumbwaiter Team to keep the prescription sheets and X-Ray Films collected from Dumbwaiter. • Plastic boxes with covers were used to keep the specimen during transportation. Biohazard label is fixed on ice boxes and ice bags to alert public. • QEH has joined the blood/ specimen transportation contract of BTS and would only use contracted service or TAXI to deliver specimen outside hospital compound. Outcomes • Patient privacy is enhanced. • Hazards and risks to public are eliminated.
