What is first aid? • provision of immediate care • a limited skill range & equipment
Guiding principles • Prevent further injury • Preserve life • Promote recovery
Scene 1 External Bleeding Three key techniques to manage: • Rest • Elevation • Direct pressure The priority is to protect yourself!
Different Professional Levels • First aid • First responder--police officer • Emergency medical technician -- ambulance service’s staff • Paramedic--highly qualified ambulance personnel
Scene 2 Severe Airway Obstruction Abdominal thrusts: • wrap your arms around the victim's sides • make one hand into a fist, the other one grabs it • do upward thrusts until the object obstructing the airway is expelled Caution: Never perform on someone who can still cough, breathe, or speak!!
Good Samaritan Law • originate from bible, Luke 10:25-37 • “Protection from liability 2. (1) Despite the rules of common law, a person described in subsection (2) who voluntarily and without reasonable expectation of compensationor reward provides the services described in that subsection is not liable for damages that result from the person's negligence in acting or failing to act while providing the services, unless it is established that the damages were caused by the gross negligence of the person. 2001, c. 2, s. 2 (1).” --Ontario's Good Samaritan Act, 2001, section 2
Good Samaritan Law In other words— • no legally liability for the death, disfigurement or disability of the victim as long as— • rationality, good faith, accordance with their level of training
Scene 3 Heart Attack & Angina • Assist the victim with medication • Loosen tight clothing • Mind the important ABC: airway, breathing, compressions
