1.6 Cell Division Cell Cycle Interphase Mitosis Cyclins Tumours
Cell Cycle 3 Stages of Cell's Life Cycle • Interphase • Mitosis (division of nucleus) • Cytokinesis (division of cytoplasm)
Interphase Three phases of Interphase • G1: cell grows, DNA transcribed, protein synthesised • S : DNA is replicated • G2 : Cell prepares for division
Cyclins • Cyclins are compounds that are involved in the control of the cell cycle. • Cyclins interact with proteins called CDK's (cyclin-dependent kinases) to form enzymes. • These enzymes control events such as microtuble formation and chromatid alignment.
Primary & Secondary Tumours • Apoptosis: programmed cell death • Tumour: unchecked growth • Benign tumour: stays • Malignant tumour: moves: cancer • Primary tumour ->metastasis -> secondary tumour
Causes of Tumours • Mutagens: Physical, chemical, & biological agents that change DNA. (radiation, tobacco smoke) • Mutation: DNA changes • Carcinogens: cancer causing DNA changes • Oncogenes: special genes with potential to cause cancer. May be altered normal genes or abnormally expressed
