  5. Accomplishments • WWF invented and pioneered the use of the debt-for-nature swap and the conservation trust fund, the two most important financial mechanisms in conservation today. (explained Later) • WWF was the driving force behind the international ban on ivory trading in 1990 and also helped to secure the international moratorium on commercial whaling.

  6. Accomplishments • WWF has helped to create more than 500 parks and protected areas in Africa, Latin America and Asia and, in the past decade alone, has secured commitments to protect more than 1 billion acres of forest habitat around the world.

  7. Debt-for-nature Swaps • Debt-for-nature swaps are designed to free up resources in debtor countries for much needed conservation activities. A debt swap involves purchasing foreign debt at a discount, converting the debt into local currency, and using the proceeds to finance local conservation activities.

  8. Funding and Membership • World Wildlife Fund has grown into the largest privately financed international conservation organization in the world • WWF is funded by members and other organizations mostly through donations • WWF field staff work on projects in more than 100 countries
