Ariel and Prospero The Tempest
“All hail, great master” - first words “To every article” (1.2.195) Ariel has terrified the sailors - “dreadful thunder claps” Ferdinand says “Hell is empty and all the devils are here” about Ariel He is extremely powerful Prospero controls him He harms no-one: “Not a hair perish’d” Ariel
Ariel • He is rebellious and free-spirited: “Is there more toil?” • He has been a perfect servant • Prospero turns on him: “malignant thing” • Ariel again seeks his approval • Ariel - air, fire, water
Caliban • Like a beast - “A freckled whelp, hag-born - not honour’d with a human shape” • Prospero saved him from Sycorax, his mother • Prospero need him: “We cannot miss him.” • Caliban - “earth” • He curses the other character • Miranda hates him - he tried to rape her according to Prospero: “thou did seek to violate the honour of my child.” • M says “any print of goodness will not take”
“You taught me language, and my profit on’t Is I know how to curse.” • Caliban does seem to merit some sympathy
