Junk food at school: Is it your right—or totally wrong? • Give a thumbs up or down if you agree or disagree that you have the right to eat junk food at school. • Turn to page p.10 in your Issues book, to the Data File. This will build your knowledge about junk food at school so that you can discuss and write about it effectively. • Follow along as I read aloud, and be prepared to report one surprising statistic or a piece of information that catches your attention using one of the following frames: • A piece of information that caught my attention is ____. • One surprising statistic is that _____. Share with a partner, then I will choose a few students to share with the class.

Words to Know Step One – Rate your knowledge of the word. 1 = you don’t know the word 2 = you recognize the word but aren’t sure what it means 3 = you are familiar with the word and can use it in a sentence 4 = you know the word and can teach it to the class Step Two – Group Discussion • Leader asks, “Are you familiar with the word ____?” of each group member and listens to his/her response, prompting students to share sentences and definitions if they can. • Group members respond with the following frames: 1 – No, I have never heard the word ____. 2 – I recognize ____; it has something to do with ____. 3 – I can use ____ in a sentence. Words to Know Procedures Step Three – Teacher introduces word, part of speech, and meaning, as well as other forms of the word. Step Four – Teacher introduces the example frame and models an answer. Then, group members share ideas and record one. Lastly, one member of each group will stand and report their example sentence.
