…esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. (1 Thessalonians 5:13 ESV) If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. (Romans 12:18 ESV) So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding. (Romans 14:19 ESV) A gift/promise or instruction to work on?
…and when they had called in the apostles, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name. And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching that the Christ is Jesus. (Acts 5:40-42 ESV) This peace is not always possible
And Saul approved of his execution. And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. (Acts 8:1 ESV) This peace is not always possible
A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. (Proverbs 15:1 ESV) Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; (James 1:19 ESV) But sometimes this peace IS within our control
Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. (Galatians 5:22-23 ESV) Like all the Spirits fruit, this one too comes from the word of the Lord I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33 ESV)
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:4-7 ESV)
What “Peace” Did Jesus Leave? • Peace with men? • Peace with self? • Peace with God! Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. (John 15:3-4 ESV)
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 5:1 ESV) …as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. (Ephesians 6:15 ESV) Jesus DID leave them the gospel of peace, for them and for US!
What “Peace” Did Jesus Leave? • Peace with men? • Peace with self? • Peace with God! • Given NOT as the world gives Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5 ESV)
What is the end result of the peace that Jesus gives? There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. (1 John 4:18 ESV) • Sin • Doubt • And fear will steal our peace… but
