  2. Definition • Emotional Disturbance: Condition in which an individual has significant difficulty in the social and emotional domain, so much so that it interferes with learning.

  3. Characteristicsof Emotional Disturbance • Inability to form and maintain interpersonal relationships • Extreme Reactions or unresponsive • Tendency towards Depression • Can be aggressive • Symptoms vary from person to person • Average in intelligence

  4. Implications in the Classroom • IEP should address behavioral as well as academic goals. • Provide students with PBS or Positive Behavioral support (classroom routine) • Teachers should have strategies for calming students down • Implement a team

  5. Meet Joon • Very artistic and intelligent • Witnessed death of parents • Cannot be alone, but she is difficult to “manage” • Routine is important to her • She talks to herself and hears voices • Likes to be alone when she paints • Sensitive to loud noises • Prone erratic behavior • Slightly aggressive • Cannot control emotions, almost burnt the house down.
