  2. Background During the last decade in Lithuania: • A great emphasis is placed on acceptance of human rights as an international norm, • Changes in attitudes towards woman’s role in the family and the society, • Increasing the need of awareness of reproductive rights

  3. What can be medical student’s contribution to advocacy of reproductive rights?

  4. Medical student A member of the society A future health care provider Young, energetic, open to new ideas and projects. Eager and able to learn and pass the knowledge to others.

  5. The main goals of student’s contribution • To get more knowledge about reproductive rights and society needs. • To spread this knowledge to other members of the society.

  6. Medical student’s projects in Lithuania • LiMSA “Prevention of STD” “Mental Health” • Fraternitas Lithuanica “Be healthy!”

  7. KMU student’s project on increasing awareness on reproductive rights among peers

  8. The overall aim To meet the needs of young people of the society and to increase the awareness about reproductive rights and gender issues among academic youth.

  9. The aims • To investigate the present situation and level of knowledge concerning reproductive rights among Lithuanian students • To provide the academic youth with the knowledge on reproductive rights • To create the network among student’s, mass media and the society for provision of knowledge

  10. The method • The main investigators - students of KMU • The target population - students of universities and high shools in Kaunas (KMU, KTU, Vilnius University, Veterinary Academy, Agricultural University) • Time - two years

  11. Step I • To perform a pilot study among students on reproductive right’s knowledge and needs • To investigate how the level of knowledge depends on student’s age, social background, education and reproductive intentions. • To provide the study results for students, academic society and mass media.

  12. Step II • To provide the medical students and student’s of the other high schools with the theoretical knowledge about reproductive rights in an attractive form: seminars, games, quizes, etc.

  13. Step III • To create the network with other medical and non-medical student’s organizations • To work with the academic society • To work with mass media and population

Expectations • Signs, flyers and advertising campaigns haven’t the significant impact for young people today. • We hope that work with peers will encourage a critical discussions and will spread the knowledge about reproductive health and rights in various perspectives. • The increased public awareness will help women to get more possibilities for reproductive health care choices.
