North Carolina Mathematics and Science Education Network (NC-MSEN)Pre-College Program The NC-MSEN Pre-College Program was formed out of a educational need to broaden the pool of underserved/underrepresented students graduating from North Carolina’s high schools prepared to pursue mathematics- and science-based majors and subsequent careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) [NC General Assembly, 1986].

NC-MSEN NC-MSEN consists of a central coordinating office located at the University of North Carolina Center for School Leadership Development and six Pre-College sites located on University of North Carolina campuses across the state. NC-MSEN Pre-College Program Sites Elizabeth City State University Fayetteville State University North Carolina State University University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill University of North Carolina Charlotte Winston-Salem State University

  4. NC-MSEN Pre-College Program (PCP) • The PCP targets students: • Grades 6-12 • Average to above average students who lack sufficient exposure to mathematics- and science-based courses and careers

NC-MSEN PCPSeniors (Class of 2011) • Pre-College Program Seniors • 98% Enrolled in College • 2% Attended Military Academies (US Naval Academy and US Air Force Academy) • 65% Pursuing STEM majors and careers • 5% Pursuing Mathematics or Science teaching majors and careers • 68% Plan to pursue STEM graduate degrees • 79% Attended In-State Colleges/Universities • 21% Attended Out-of-State Colleges/Universities

  8. NC-MSEN PCP: A Nationally Recognized Program 1) Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring For outstanding mentoring of STEM students. Awarded by the National Science Foundation 2)Quality Education for Minorities Award For outstanding and sustain success in building partnerships for minority achievement in mathematics, science and engineering. Awarded by the Quality Education for Minorities Network 3) Partnership Award in Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education For North Carolina organizations that have an innovative partnership supporting science, mathematics and technology (SMT) education. Awarded by the NC Science, Mathematics, Technology Education Center.
