  4. PURPOSE OF THE VISIT To oversee conditional grants-funded projects (both crops and livestock production) and their alignment to the agricultural policy action plan. To assess the level of support provided to smallholder producers and land reform beneficiaries (farm owners). To further understand the state of development of irrigation schemes and aquaculture in the Western Cape Province. To determine through the oversight, how drought relief has been disbursed to farmers and how the province has recovered from drought. To further receive update on the impact of avian influenza on the poultry and ostrich industry, as well as poultry product prices. To determine the state of veterinary services and the availability of animal health technicians in the Western Cape.

  5. APPROACH AND PREPARATIONS A communique was sent to Minister Zokwana (MP), requesting the Member of the Executive Council (MEC), Head of Department (HOD) and senior officials from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF), together with the Western Cape Provincial Department of Agriculture officials. To ensure provision and circulation of project profiles to the delegation prior to the visit. To further ensure that project leaders and beneficiaries/ farm owners are on site on the day of the visit for members to interact.
