Keeping Others Out of Your Computer Computer Security
Internet Security • Buy and install a firewall program: firewall will block intruders from breaking into your Windows PC across the Internet. • Buy, install and update antivirus software: Antivirus software is no good if you don't run it. • Don't open attachments unless you asked somebody to send it to you: It's child's play for a virus creator to hide a virus in a program that makes a kitty appear on your screen, but you can be sure that the people who pass along "cute" attachments never realize that.
Internet Security (cont.) • Stop using cookies: Cookies are small files on your PC that Web sites use to keep track of you. Sites that pick up e-mail cookies know even more about you than you might think. • Use a Limited account: Administrators can install software and change system settings. Limited accounts don't have these privileges. So, if you use the Internet with a Limited account, and you click on the wrong thing, malware cannot install itself.
Internet Security (cont.) • Watch out for “crush” sites: Spammers send out messages with subject lines like "Someone has a crush on you.“To find out who has the crush, you must guess by entering the correct e-mail address. • Surf safely: Set Internet Explorer's Security and Privacy levels to at least Medium, disable third-party cookies, and never click on a button or pop-up dialog without reading it carefully. Never allow a download that you didn't specifically request. • (http://www.erdtshare.org/hf_resources/inet_basic_10_rules.pdf )
