Requirements • Multiwavelength studies (optical, X-ray, IR…etc.) • Use of data from both ground- and space-based observatories • General-purpose, “open”-access, (0.5-1 yr) proposal-cycle based observatories • Ground-based (most often optical/near-IR) studies required from access to space Oslo: • Direct access to 2.56m Nordic Optical Telescope • Current priorities in Oslo are CMB and theory Håkon Dahle, ITA, UiO

ASTRONET and E-ELT • Initiated by European research councils • Science-driven prioritization for ALL of European astronomy on a ~15 year time scale • Science vision and Infrastructure roadmap • Highest priority (ground) : European extremely large telescope (E-ELT), SKA E-ELT: • 42m optical/NIR telescope (ESFRI project) • Decision on construction 2010 • Major construction phase 2012-2017 • <1h at E-ELT = 1 year at Nordic Optical Telescope • Project led by European Southern Observatory (ESO) • ESO currently has 14 member states, runs observatories at 3 sites in Chile (La Silla, Paranal, Atacama Large Millimetre Array in construction), is playing a CERN-like role for European astronomy • Membership cost: ~20-25% of CERN Håkon Dahle, ITA, UiO
