Progressive Legislation and Presidents U.S. History Dec 7. 1941 (jk-it’s 2010)
Spark 13 • 1. If you had all the power in Colorado Springs (or the United States, or THE WORLD if you’re more the megalomaniac-pinky-and-the-brain-type) what law would you pass first? • 2. What is the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history?? • 3. Please finish Ch 11(not 12) Sec. 1 #s 2, 3, and 4 on your reading guide. This will prepare us to go where we’re headed today.
Agenda and Objectives • Spark 12-Progressive overview • Go over filmnotes • Progressive survey of Presidents and legislation • Group competition “Problem:Solution” • Ch. 11 Sec. 2 • (I will check first 3 parts-Ch.10 Sec. 4, Ch. 11 Sec.’s 1 and 2 ---tomorrow)
Go over film notes • Don’t pass out—just put on screen • Now a few slides of notes---write these where it makes sense to write them---don’t write twice!!! • Only the bold!!
Era of Progressivism • This has been brewing in U.S. for awhile • By 1900-Industrial filth, overcrowding, overworked, underpaid, dangerous, reckless business practices for sake of profit, corrupt politicians….ALL in the land of the free, home of the brave, sanctuary of opportunity and a fair shot…doesn’t sound much like progress.
4 Goals of Progressives • Gov. should be accountable to citizens • Gov. should curb power and influence of super wealthy • Gov. should expand powers to be more active in improving citizens’ lives • Gov. should be more efficient, less corrupt so they can handle expanded role
Early writers • 1879 Henry George –Progress and Poverty • povertyinan advanced society?? • 1888 Edward Bellamy – Looking Backward • Utopian socialism w/ Gov. take-over of biz
Later writers • Upton Sinclair – The Jungle • Meatpacking industry • Lincoln Steffens –The Shame of the Cities • Political machines and corruption • Ida Tarbell – The History of the Standard Oil Company • Abuses by SOC
Progressive Presidents • Teddy Roosevelt -1901-1908 • William Taft 1908-1912 • Woodrow Wilson 1912-1920
Roosevelt – “the Bull Moose” • One of America’s greatest characters • Many firsts as President • V.P. to Pres. • White House press room • Invite African American to dinner @ WH • Leave U.S. soil while in office (Panama C.) • Fly in an airplane • “Bully Pulpit” use power of Pres. to advance agenda – in U.S. and foreign affairs • “trust buster” • Campaign speech story- Oct. 14, 1912 Mil. Wis
William Taft – • “the loneliest job in the world” • Basically elected b/c TR handpicks him • Continues reforms, but has NO personality • Even better record than TR • More trusts busted, more public lands reserved • In 4 years, TR had 7!! • Ran again in 1912 but TR did too • Bull Moose party • Split Repub. Vote and Wilson wins • “I’m glad to be going…” (then on to S.C.)
Woodrow Wilson • Highlights from Woody • guides U.S. through WWI • Prohibition era • Women’s suffrage • True reformer • Clayton Anti-trust Act • Federal Trade Commission (FTC) • Federal Reserve System • Wins second term in 1916 • Ran on slogan “no WWI”
Limits and the end of Progressivism • “convenient” reforms – NO social justice • Jim Crow extended-A. Americans felt ignored • Poor people-many not in favor • Ex. –Child labor laws • End of P. Era --- • WWI-war drowns out reform • Women’s suffrage – last major reform
Problem / Solution • In groups-1 paper/group • I give you a problem you write the solution (i.e. the legislation passed in reaction) • If you don’t see specific legislation you can just put a category (i.e. – “public health”)
Problem / Solution 1. Triangle Shirtwaist fire – -145 dead, mostly women/children -Locked doors -no sprinklers • Galveston Hurricane-deadliest natural disaster in history -6,000 dead -emergency Gov. installed to manage
Problem / Solution • 3. Political Corruption/Voter Fraud/Political bosses • Boss Tweed steals $100,000,000 from NYC • In New Jersey-reports of dead people voting 65 times, dogs voting, etc. • 4. Muckrakers writings – TR and The Jungle • 5. Drunkenness and domestic violence skyrockets from 1860 -1900
Problem / Solution • 6. Extremely dangerous working conditions • 25,000 work related deaths per year • 1910-1917 – 72,000 railroad workers died on job • 7. 1900 3% of people/owners account for 90 % of biz profit • 8. Thousands of acres of land deforested, mined out, over-logged, exploited by 1900
