  2. Quality Assurance The PGCTHE provides an approved entry route into Higher Education teaching for staff. The programme is informed by: AU’s Learning and Teaching Strategy University Quality Handbook for Staff (see appendix 7 of the PGCTHE Handbook) Successful completion of the programme is normally a formal probation requirement for newly appointed academic staff.

  3. Probationary Appointments New members of academic staff are required to undertake a period of probation of up to 3 years; Members of staff with less than three years of full time lecturing experience are required to undertake compulsory professional development, which is recorded in the probationary compact; The probationary compact is ratified and monitored by the Probationary Appointments Committee (PAC); The Chair of PAC has overall authority in setting terms of probation including CPD arrangements; The Learning and Teaching Development Coordinator sits on PAC in an advisory capacity and updates PAC on PGCTHE candidates progress

  4. Probationary Appointments You must inform LTDC / CDSAP if: You go on research leave; You are ill for an extended period that may effect your probationary compact; Your mentor changes or goes on research leave; The terms of your contract change; You leave employment whilst enrolled on the PGCTHE; Any other issue that may effect your probation or registration on the PGCTHE.

  5. Registration As a registered student of Aberystwyth University you will be required to: Sign a postgraduate registration form which will be completed on the third day of the induction in Aberystwyth; Ensure you renew your registration annually; Abide by the Aberystwyth UniversityAcademic Regulations

  6. Completing the Award The average time from registration to submission is four semesters; When a candidate wishes to complete they must submit an Intention to Submit Form to the CDSAP office three months in advance of the portfolio submission date; Portfolio submission deadlines are December and May; The portfolio Assessment Panel meets bi-annually in January and June; The Board of Studies meets bi-annually in January and June to ratify the decision of the Assessment Panel;

  7. Referral Two decisions may be made by the Assessment Panel: Pass or Referral; A portfolio may be resubmitted a maximum of two times (three assessments in total); PAC are informed if a candidate is referred. If a candidate fails to complete the PGCTHE this may be grounds for termination of employment; If a candidate fails to complete the PGCTHE within the probationary period, they may have their probation extended by up to 12 months. This may impact on: Confirmation in post; Promotion to Grade 8 Promotion to Senior Lecturer (Grade 9) Ability to apply for Teaching and Learning Excellence Awards

  8. Withdrawal A candidate on probationcannot withdraw from the PGCTHE, unless they leave the employment of Aberystwyth University; Only the Chair of PAC can remove or alter the PGCTHE element from the probationary compact; Elective candidates may withdraw from the award, in consultation with their mentor and the Learning and Teaching Development Coordinator; If a candidate leaves Aberystwyth University whilst on the PGCTHE, the university will not support the completion of the award, however transfer of Acquired Prior Learning may be possible for elements of the award.
