  1. We’re back! • Please get out the following: • Your chapter on “Reading the Story” • Your typed response the chapter • Your Famous Quote assignment (you will share this in a small group)

  2. Today’s Outcomes • Learn a little more about each other • Prepare for Thursday and Friday’s timed writing and discussion • Gain a little more understanding about this class

  3. Famous Quote Share • Decide who is Partner A and who is Partner B • When I say, Partner A will read what they wrote to Partner B. Partner B, stand there and look cute. • When I say, Partner B will read what they wrote to Partner A. Partner A, stand there and look cute. • I will ask for three volunteers to read to the class what they wrote about their famous quote. • I will collect these when we are done.

  4. Groups for Thursday and Friday—Hr. 5

  5. Groups for Thursday and Friday—Hr. 6

  6. Homework • Read chapter on “Theme.” The information will be useful for the timed writing and discussion. Consider this information when you prepare for both. • Discussion prep and/or timed writing prep

  7. Discussion Prep • The guiding questions of the discussion are about the literary merit of both novels. • Which novel has more literary value than the other and how? • What does each novel teach us and how? • In terms of its commercial vs. literary value, which will stand the test of time and why? • You should bring: • 2 completed MWDS (Major Works Data Sheets) • Your books (during your discussion you should use examples from the novel to support your claims…either directly quoted or paraphrased. It should be obvious you read the book.) • Your response to today’s chapter • Maybe another page of notes that will answer the questions above.

  8. Discussion Day • Meet in 312 immediately. • I will collect your discussion prep and MWDS. You keep the books for now. • This discussion will NOT be graded, but I will be taking notes to get an idea on your discussion skills (later you WILL be graded and no retakes) and offer feedback later. • A good discussion will equally consider both books and be a healthy debate. This is not “I love this book because…” But rather, “This book has value, and here is why…”

  9. Timed Writing Prep • CHOOSE ONE BOOK TO WRITE ABOUT FOR THIS TIMED WRITING. DO NOT WRITE ABOUT BOTH BOOKS! • You may write all other this prompt sheet. What ever notes you put on here, you may use tomorrow. Write an outline, your thesis, your ideas, theme statements, etc. No Books allowed! • You DON’T need direct quotes, but must paraphrase examples from the text. It must be OBVIOUS you know the text well. • You will meet here. You need a PEN. I will have paper. You will be on your honor. If you miss your timed writing, you MUST come in after school to make it up. • This is NOT graded, but I will give you feedback and you will write other one for a GRADE later.

  10. Timed Writing Prompt---Break it down • “You can leave home all you want, but home will never leave you.” —Sonsyrea Tate Sonsyrea Tate’s statement suggests that “home” may be conceived of as a dwelling, a place, or a state of mind. It may have positive or negative associations, but in either case, it may have a considerable influence on an individual. Choose a novel or play in which a central character leaves home yet finds that home remains significant. Write a well-developed essay in which you analyze the importance of “home” to this character and the reasons for its continuing influence. Explain how the character’s idea of home illuminatesthe larger meaning of the work.

  11. What is the theme of the book? What is its overall meaning? (Claim or thesis) • Once you figure that idea out HOW (examples for the novel) does this time to the idea of home. (Your theme doesn’t have to do with home, but it will probably relate somehow). • What examples (evidence) from the novel show the development of the novel’s meaning or theme? How? So what? (Warrant) • Your examples should show evidence that you know the book from beginning, middle and end. • Your paper will NOT be a summary of events. You have to explain how these events tie to the idea of home and support the novel’s theme. These events happened and here’s why they are important and what they mean.
