Agenda Methodology The problem with UC How to Solve the Challenges Technical Integration Methods Introduction Voice Integration Options Video Integration Options Open Q&A
Risks and Challenges Adoption: Just because you build it… they may not come Too many technologies IT requires a major cultural change as traditional silos must be merged Pan Am
The Problem with UC First, you must define it within the context of your business. Business requirements How will this initiative actually improve results/performance? User requirements Workflows and inefficiencies Technical requirements Security Network Compliance Have you mapped your definition to specific goals? Have you defined and analyzed existing gaps?
Identify Stakeholders UC will embed communications into work flows and radically change the way people do business Solicit input up-front to increase support and user adoption when deployed Stakeholder Groups Line of Business IT - Network IT - Applications IT - Security
Is This Your Organization? Leadership LOB Customer Experience LOB Product Management LOB Marketing IT Security IT Network Telecom IT Applications Aligned Incentives Build Bridges User Groups
User Adoption Success=User Adoption Create an Adoption Plan Initial role-out to control group will build the excitement Enlist super users in each department to evangelize and help new users Track usage Make changes if necessary to increase adoption
Day Two Support Budget ongoing support as part of the UC Infrastructure Plan You must integrate your internal support groups as UC merges traditional IT groups. It is important to have support agreements and SLAs in place prior to roll out, regardless if the support is internal or external Lengthy outages and poor user support will kill adoption faster than anything else. and will take considerable time to recover
Conclusion Proper planning insures success Having an outside partner can speed up the deployment and reduce risk Include users up-front so your solution meets their needsto ensure adoption Do an honest assessment of your current infrastructure Have User Adoption and Day Two plans in place prior to going live
Integration Background Many methods are available, but all attempt to rationalize Signaling – SIP interworking, session management Media – SDP/codecs It cannot just be one or the other—must account for both.
Codecs to Consider Voice RTAudio Siren (Lync Conferencing) G.711 (typical IP-PBX) G.729 (typical IP-PBX) G.722 (wideband) Video RTVideo (Lync) H.263 (Lync 2010, Mac 2011, and traditional systems) H.264 AVC and SVC Content H.239 (traditional codecs) RDP (Lync)
Integration Background Three main methodologies: Take over signaling/media control (e.g., ACA or CUCI-Lync) Share signaling/media (Remote Call Control, direct registration) Normalize signaling/media (gateways, SIP trunks, federation)
Client Plug-In – How it Works Client integration. Plug-in for Lync. Uses Microsoft APIs to alter the behavior of the Lync client. Generally relegates Lync to IM/Presence only. Often Disables Lync client audio and video (using the TelephonyMode registry setting – can be re-enabled) Drives PBX voice/video (peer-to-peer) to Lync clients
Active Directory H323Device Avaya Aura® Communication Manager Avaya Aura® Session Manager Lync 2010 or Lync 2013 SIP Avaya one-X® (SIP) SIP Video Calling to a Avaya Flare® Experience on iPad (SIP) ACA for Microsoft LyncComputer Mode ACA for Microsoft LyncComputer Mode Media SRTP
RCC – How it Works Server integration between Lync Front End and Avaya AES. Configured per-user on the Lync Server. Allows for click-to-dial from Lync to launch on a PBX phone. Lync peer-to-peer still functional (if configured) Escalate from voice to video does not work. Future of the protocol is murky.
Use Cases Lync Dial-in Conferencing Lync Enterprise Voice Exchange UM
SIP Trunking – How it Works Server integration between PBX and Lync Mediation Server using: SIP-enabled PBX (proxy) Session Border Controller TDM-SIP Gateway Use cases: Lync Enterprise Voice Lync Dial-in Conferencing Exchange UM
Common Deployment Typical call flow User receives call, trunk terminates on PBX phone. PBX simultaneously rings Lync (user can answer in either place) Exchange UM and Simultaneous Ring to mobile phone supported. Benefit: Allows full Lync experience while still sweating existing assets.
