E N D
Vocab. • Bankrupt-in debt • Reform-a change of the tax system • Estates General-meeting of the representatives of all 3 estates of France • Deputies-representatives of each estate
Vocab. • Caheirs de doleances-a list of complaints drawn up by the peasants • National assembly- “true” parliament of France; deputies of 3rd estate which represented 96% of population • Constitution-written form of how France was to be governed • Tennis Court Oath-National assembly members refused to leave until the King gave in to their demands
Peasants of France • Growing tired of working and having nothing to show for it • No money or clothes to support large families • To the point of refusing tax-collectors and protecting what they have with their lives
Looking Back • People feel things in France are going to change • King seems willing to listen to complaints • Peasants think of everything they’ve been going through • Does not look like there will be a positive outcome
Government Goes Broke • Govt. spent too much $$ on wars • Royals spent too much $$ on luxuries • Tax system is corrupt; collectors keeping $$
Bad Harvests • Many people are dependent on farming • Bad harvests mean less money for farmers • Less food produced=higher cost of food • If no one can buy the goods, employers must cut costs (fire people)
Estates General Meeting • 1100 members in attendance; 557 represent 3rd estate • 3rd estate deputies represent 96% of the population • Not an accurate distribution of people
Goals of the E.G. • Nobles & Clergy-control the meeting to continue dominating society • Middle Class-want an English style democracy; King and parliament share power; parliament actually represents the common people • Peasants-want solutions to their problems; come up with a list
Mistakes of Louis • Has Estates General meeting at Versailles; where his body guards are • Did not have any solutions for them to discuss; instead let the deputies come up with their own • Loses control of the meeting
Results of Mistakes • 3rd estate deputies get tired of arguing • Declare themselves a “National Assembly” • Draft their own constitution • Won’t leave until he signs it
