Glittering generalities • persuasive technique utilizing vague words, phrases, or statements that have a feel-good quality to them.
Card-stacking • persuasive technique that gives only the positive side of a product or service, ignoring the competition.
Testimonials • persuasive technique utilizing a famous spokesperson to testify to the greatness of the product or service.
Scientific Claim • Statistics and numbers are used to prove the superiority of the product or company. This is a clear example of the advertising technique, as it is claiming that drivers save much more money by switching to Allstate company using a number.
Transfer • persuasive technique that uses a strong pictorial symbol or general phrase that arouses the audience’s emotions so that they’ll connect/transfer the emotion to the product being sold.
Plain Folks • Plain Folks is a suggestion that the product or other matter is perfect for ordinary people, and is good of value. This is a great example of Plain Folks, ordinary people are used to suggest that the product is practical and everyone can afford it
Limited Opportunity • persuasive technique that emphasizes a short time frame to take advantage of whatever the advertisement/speaker/writer offers. (i.e. One day sale)
Snob Appeal • Snob Appeal is a suggestion that the use of the product makes the costumer part of an elite group, who are seen as the higher and attractive class of society. This is a good example of Snob Appeal because it suggests that if you use that product you will be muscular and attractive.
