  2. Defining Abuse of people in later life 'Violation of an individual's human or civil rights by any other person or persons.' No Secrets, DH/Home Office 2000 ‘A single or repeated act or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person.’ Action on Elder Abuse 1993

Types of Abuse • Physical • Financial • Sexual • Psychological / Emotional • Neglect • Discriminatory • Institutional • The term ‘multiple abuse’ is used to describe situations where two or more types of abuse are occurring simultaneously. In practice it is rare to find one type of abuse occurring in isolation.

  4. Adult Safeguarding • Incorporates the concepts of: • Prevention • Empowerment • Protection • Justice • Should enable adults to retain: • As much independence as possible • Well-being / dignity • Choice / control over their life • Their human rights • A life free from abuse and neglect
