INBRE Science Research Core Purposes: 1) to provide statewide access to state-of-the-art research technology not commonly found at PUIs 2) to offer networking through an instate Annual Scientific Research Symposium
INBRE Support of Facilities • The Arkansas INBRE supports existing core facilities on the UAMS and UAF campuses • Facilities are chosen primarily on the basis of Project Leader needs • INBRE support to each facility • Percentage of personnel (director and technician’s salaries) • Some equipment purchase and/or service contracts • Supply budget • No actual fees for INBRE researchers – but only minimal support for supplies
Science Research Core – R. Koeppe, PhD, UArk Core Director FACILITIES: Proteomics Facility Alan Tackett, PhD Joshua Sakon, PhD Genomics Facility Helen Beneš, PhD Digital Microscopy Facility Richard Kurten, PhD
Genomics Facility – H. Beneš, PhD, UAMS, Director Services Offered: • Plasmid DNA preparation • Recombinant plasmid construction • Subcloning of PCR products or genomic DNA fragments • Generation of reporter gene constructs • Addition of fluorescent or antigen-specific tags • Construct verification with help of the UAMS DNA sequencing facility • In vitro Mutagenesis • Construct verification by DNA sequencing
Proteomics Facility – A. Tackett, PhD, UAMS and J. Sakon, PhD, UArk, Directors Facility grew out of first Arkansas COBRE award. Services Offered: • Protein characterization by mass spectrometry • Identification of unknown proteins • Quantitative comparison of proteins in biological/medical samples • Mapping of post-translational modifications • Access to specialized instrumentation • LTQ XL ion trap, MALDI-prOTOF and MALDI-LTQ ion trap mass spectrometers • ProGest robot for “in-gel” digestion of polypeptides • Mascot server for data analysis
Digital Microscopy Facility – R. Kurten, PhD, UAMS, Director Services Offered: • Access to multiple microscope workstations • Especially for static and time-lapse imaging of living cells, using controlled perfusion systems • With microinjection, FRET and FRAP capabilities • For imaging of fluorescently labeled fusion proteins • For imaging of fixed biological/medical samples • Training of researchers to collect multicolor images by fluorescence microscopy
Facility Workshops • Presented by Facility Directors in different venues - Lunchtime presentations to Student Summer Fellows - Broadcast through Access Grid studios to UArk and UALR - Workshops at Annual Research Symposium - Small group training sessions as requested
