The motivator of servant leadership is gratitude.
Gratitude leads us toward death and resurrection.
We go to heaven or hell on the basis of giving or not giving to the needy.
“Reaching out to the poor is an essential component of the spiritual life.” Ron Rolheiser

11 Passion Story Model of a community Each passion story shows us a model of Jesus that reflects the gospel’s original community:
John’s community: very mixed, mostly Jews, some gentiles, Samaritans, etc. See Jn 18-19
Mark’s community: mostly Gentiles, see Mk 14-15
Matthew’s community: better educated Jews who believe in Jesus, but argue over the law. See Mt 26-27
Luke’s community: wealthier Gentile Christians in an urban setting, becoming complacent. See Lk 24:13-53
Why? Community circumstances & author’s purpose?
John: to strengthen a group ostracized by other Jews for their faith
Mark: to encourage a group undergoing difficult trials and persecutions
Matthew: to teach a community with internal divisions and external enemies
Luke: to challenge believers to put their faith into practice more fully

13 Focusing the Spirituality Pilate’s behavior:
Changes from arrogant representative of Roman power
To “scared rabbit”
He extracts Judean confession of allegiance to Caesar
Just when the Passover ritual called for allegiance to God alone.

14 Appropriating the Spirituality Peter denies discipleship:
To the high priest’s servant
Is Peter telling the truth or lying about not being a disciple?
The other disciple gains entrance to the courtyard.
Who is this? Social status?
At the cross:
The beloved disciple Jn only
Women disciples
