What is gravity? • Gravity is a force that attracts all objects toward each other. • The law of universal gravitation states: Every object in the universe attracts every other object. • The strength of the force of gravity between two objects depends on two factors: • The mass of the objects • The distance between the objects (contd.)
1. PredictWould a spaceship experience a stronger force of gravity close to Earth or close to the moon? Why?
What keeps objects in orbit in the solar system? • Inertia is the tendency of an object to resist a change in motion. • The greater an object’s mass, the greater its inertia. • Newton’s first law of motion says that an object at rest will stay at rest and an object in motion will stay in motion with a constant speed and direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. • Inertia and gravity combine to keep objects in orbit. Gravity pulls planets toward the sun and keeps them from moving off in a straight line. Inertia keeps objects moving forward so they do not fall toward the sun. (contd.)
The diagram shows how gravity and inertia combine to keep objects in orbit. 2. Summarize In your own words, explain why planets orbit the sun.
