Bo Qian 1st IR/Microwave Emissivity Group Meeting,NOAA 2008-07-07 Work Progress Report
Outline MODIS/ASTER Emissivity Data Collection MODIS/ASTER Emissivity Data Introduction ---MODIS Emissivity Data Introduction (not to talk) ---ASTER Emissivity Data Introduction Data Processing On-going Plan
MODIS/ASTER Emissivity Data Collection All MODIS/ASTER Globe Emissivity data derived from “Earth Observing System Data Gateway ” that is a website specially searching for and order earth science data products from NASA and affiliated centers .
ASTER and Data introduction ASTER-Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer obtains high-resolution (15 to 90 square meters per pixel) images of the Earth in 14 different wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum, ranging from visible to thermal infrared light. Scientists use ASTER data to create detailed maps of land surface temperature, emissivity, reflectance, and elevation.
ASTER is the only high spatial resolution instrument on the Terra platform. Unlike the other instruments aboard Terra, ASTER will not collect data continuously; rather, it will collect an average of 8 minutes of data per orbit. All three ASTER telescopes (VNIR, SWIR, and TIR) are pointable in the crosstrack direction. Given its high resolution and its ability to change viewing angles, ASTER will produce stereoscopic images and detailed terrain height models.
ASTER and Data introduction The ASTER instrument was built in Japan for the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). A joint United States/Japan Science Team is responsible for instrument design, calibration, and data validation ASTER products are in HDF-EOS format All ASTER data is on the toll
ASTER and Data introduction ASTER surface emissivity data attributes • Product ID: AST 05 • Product Level: 2 • Production Mode: on-request • Product Size (MB): 9 • Absolute Accuracy: 0.05-0.1 • Relative Accuracy: 0.005 • Horizontal Resolution (m) : 90
Data Processing Focus on the extracting the emissivity information Improve the program codes in C++/Fortran Data Fusion/Assimilation (on going……) --Theory --Methods
Strengths Supervisors and Members support High Level supervisor Diverse group members with good morale Existing available resources in groups and Internet Commitment ,interest and enthusiasm
Weaknesses & challenges Zero experience on processing HDF data Zero experience on data fusion and assimilation More tools need to be mastered Fortran/C++ programming IDL mapping Some else software in remote sensing application Higher efficiency is needed Limited time for dissertation and project
On-going Plan Improve the data processing code Read more references Master theory and methods in data fusion and assimilation
