Changing behaviour towards a more sustainable transport system Paris, le 23 Juin 2004 LET’s involvement in the Cost action 355 Danièle PATIER, Jean-Louis ROUTHIER, Laboratoire d ’Economie des Transports, Lyon, France
LET’s involvement in “Freight transport and energy consumption” Urban goods transport Methodology for data collection Urban goods transport surveys The follow-up of the changes in the city dweller’s behaviour Analysis of urban logistics: actors and practices The follow-up of the transformations concerning the supply chain in the urban area the evaluation of the environmental effects of urban goods transport Danièle PATIER, Jean-Louis ROUTHIER, Laboratoire d ’Economie des Transports, Lyon, France
LET’s interest in the Cost action LET would be interested in realising connection between the total Supply chain following of a product and his last distribution mode in the urban area A better knowledge of the connection between interurban and intra-urban methods Manufacturer Supermarket Nat. Pf. ? ? Reg. Pf. Consumer Wholesailer urban area Interurban area Danièle PATIER, Jean-Louis ROUTHIER, Laboratoire d ’Economie des Transports, Lyon, France
LET’s tools for the Cost action 3 quantitative surveys about urban goods transport : • 4,500 establishments (premises) • 6,000 deliveries and pick ups • 10,000 parcels • 2,200 rounds Results : • a data base • ratios and characteristic variables • a model for decision making : FRETURB • (including the household purchasing and environmental appraisal) • a software for town planers Danièle PATIER, Jean-Louis ROUTHIER, Laboratoire d ’Economie des Transports, Lyon, France
LET’s tools for the Cost action qualitative surveys : • 1. Transformations concerning the city dweller ’s behaviour : • motorization • transportation mode • new purchasing behaviour : on-line retailing, • home deliveries and future effects on city logistics 2. Changes in urban logistics : • new organisation of logistic chain • location of the activities • own account and carriers • BtoC organisation for deliveries • The role of the warehouse, platform... Danièle PATIER, Jean-Louis ROUTHIER, Laboratoire d ’Economie des Transports, Lyon, France
Methodological questioning Our field is the micro-economy of each establishment activity and logistic • We know the type of (loaded or unloaded) good, the description • of the parcel (its weight, its packaging, its way of moving..) • We know the type of products included in the parcel, • We know the upstream movement of the parcel, • But we don’t know the upstream movement of each product About the product purchasing • We know the household behaviour for purchasing • We don’t know : • how to link the product kept in stock in the store and the one which is bought by the consumer, - how it is shipped from the store to home Danièle PATIER, Jean-Louis ROUTHIER, Laboratoire d ’Economie des Transports, Lyon, France
Available data We know the movement of each type of product (dried, fresh, alimentary, frozen foodstuffs..), • We are able to do an energetic assesment of those chains of products, • We don’t know the part of energy necessary to transport the yoghurt which is consumed by a household with two 5 and 7 old children!!
