Education, Human Resource Development (EHRD) and Diversity Activities Improving Learning by Addressing Misconceptions in Materials Science Andrew Heckler, Rebecca Rosenblatt The Materials Science Education Research program within CEM seeks to identify student difficulties in learning materials science and develop tools to address these difficulties. For maximum impact, the research focuses on an introductory materials science and engineering course found at many universities. Method: Research Cycle of Improvement: 1. Identify student misconceptions in materials science 2. Design and implement innovative curriculum 3. Assess effectiveness Results of Initial Implementation: 1. Students are highly engaged in small group activities 2. Increase in scores about one standard deviation over control group Plans: 1. Design and implement materials for full course at OSU 2. Form partnerships to maximize applicability of curriculum nationally 3. Design standard assessment instrument An NSF Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) Supported under NSF Award Number DMR-0820414
