Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common mental health disorders of childhood • The cause of ADHD are unknown but genetics and environmental factors are likely to play a role • Symptoms include difficulty staying focused and paying attention, difficulty controlling behavior, and hyperactivity (over-activity) WHAT IS ADHD
Number of children 3-17 years of age ever diagnosed with ADHD: 5.2 million • From 1998–2000 through 2007–2009, the prevalence of ADHD increased among children aged 5–17 years, from 6.9% to 9.0%. • 60 percent of all children with ADHD are receiving medication for treating the disorder (Ritalin mostly prescribed) STATISTICS
Inattention • Fails to give close attention to details • Often has trouble keeping attention on tasks or play activities • Often does not seem to listen when spoken to directly • Often does not follow through on instructions • Often has trouble organizing activities • Avoids tasks requiring sustained mental effort • Often loses things needed for tasks and activities • Is often easily distracted • Is often forgetful in daily activities DSM-IV CRITERIA
Hyperactivity • Fidgets with hands or feet or squirms in seat • Often gets up from seat when remaining in seat is expected • Runs about or runs excessively • Often has trouble playing or doing leisure activities quietly • Is often "on the go" or often acts as if "driven by a motor" • Often talks excessively • Impulsivity • Often blurts out answers before questions have been finished • Often has trouble waiting one's turn • Often interrupts or intrudes on others DSM-IV CRITERIA
