2. Origins of PBL at UD: In 1992, a handful of science faculty members, concerned about how well their students were learning, began to use PBL in their courses. In 1993, six faculty members submitted a proposal to the NSF; it was awarded in 1994. During the next four years, PBL courses were created in many departments. Numerous PBL workshops were held. In June 1996 an international PBL conference was held at UD Institute for Transforming Undergraduate Education

3. ITUE was created in 1997 to promote reform of undergraduate education through faculty development and course design and to infuse the institution with a successful model of instruction. Institute Fellows receive hands-on experience in employing active learning strategies and effective use of technology in their classrooms. In addition, Fellows are eligible for discretionary funding to support transformation of their courses. Institute for Transforming Undergraduate Education
